Holker Hall is situated a short distance from Grange-over-Sands which overlooks the far reaching sands of Morecambe Bay. The Hall is situated in wonderful Cumbrian countryside with gardens set against the background of the Cumbrian fells.
The name Holker comes from a Norse word, which means 'a rising in marshy land'. The earliest records of a building here date back some 500 years. The mansion is in a neo-Elizabethan style, although some rebuilding was required after a fire in 1871 which destroyed the West Wing of the building. It is the west wing of Holker Hall, built in red sandstone, which is open to the public.
Unlike many similar properties, Holker Hall is not owned by the National Trust. The property is owned by Lord and Lady Cavendish whose ancestors have owned the property for generations.
As well as the house and extensive gardens (open throughout the year), there is a food hall and gift shop.
